Dynamic Landscape: creating movement and mood in abstract landscape painting

Over the course of this three day painting course we will spend some time drawing and painting outside in the landscape, gathering visual 'notes' and sketchbook work which will help to inform the studio work.

Back in the studio we will build layers, textures and surfaces using a range of dynamic and experimental processes, developing a series of responses to the landscape that also leave room for a more abstract interpretation of sights, sounds and experiences. Working predominantly in acrylics we will also play with mixing different media, allowing the materials to guide our processes.

Whilst drawing in the broadest sense will underpin the course, there will be a strong emphasis on play, experimentation and freedom in our approach, with the aim of making expressive and exciting outcomes.

During this course there will be the opportunity to work in the new Drawing Barn - with time spent on larger wall-based work.

Lunches and refreshments included. Days run from 10am to 4pm (ish)

About Freya

Freya Horsley is an abstract landscape painter whose work is as much about experience and interpretation as it is about description and place. Drawing outside in the landscape is an important part of her practice, and she has taken her sketchbooks with her to all corners of the UK and as far afield as the Himalayas. Back in the studio her process is free, fluid and active, building up liquid veils and layers alongside more painterly textured areas as a response to her experience of being in the landscape and the space and pause it offers.

"Led by my responses to landscape, light and weather and also by the process of painting itself, I make paintings that refer to both the permanent elemental nature of land and a more ephemeral sense of fluidity and change. In drawings made on the spot and in larger paintings in the studio, I try to capture the intangibility of the changes which rain, mist, sunlight, cloud, snow bring to the face of the land".

Born and brought up in the south west but now based in her Yorkshire studio, Freya has a BA Hons in Fine Art and an MA in History of Art. Alongside painting professionally and exhibiting, she has taught at A-Level, Foundation and Degree level, in addition to adult education courses in many aspects of drawing, painting and printmaking.
