Grand Landscapes:
Exploring Landscape Drawing with Charcoal, on a Grand Scale.

This course is suitable for all levels; beginners and those who have some skills with charcoal and want to develop them further and on a large scale.

This course is designed to be dense with technique demonstrations at the start, moving towards supported independent working from day 2. With an emphasis on working large, and the luxury of four days you’ll be able to develop at least one large scale drawing towards completion, as well as other smaller drawings of various sizes.

We start by familiarizing ourselves with our tools – the qualities of the different types of charcoal, the tools that can be used with it and how these can be combined. It's always good to begin with this foundation. There will then be a series of demonstration lead set tasks to build your skills with these tools. We’ll explore how to gather sources to work from, and the particulars of working on a large scale, multi-layered, developed charcoal drawing. Each student will use their own imagery making the tasks personal and individual.

Kate will show examples of her own work, and ways to use sketchbooks and basic photography to record source material for your drawings. You will be working with photographs that you take on site to make a personal response to the landscape of Lund Studios

NOTE - This course will be in The Drawing Barn, with much work standing/working on a large scale at a wall.

Lunches and refreshments included. Days run from 10am to 4pm (ish)
