Changing Elements – Expressive Drawing Processes

A landscape is a dynamic thing, with constantly changing light and weather. As a keen plein-air artist Kittie will guide students through different methods of capturing the energy of place through mixed media drawing techniques. Starting outdoors to consider quick and slow methods of gathering visual information, students will then be encouraged to explore ways of keeping a fresh language in drawings made back in the studio. Students will be introduced to ways of working with Indian ink, charcoal, soft pastel and collage to create lively, expressive pieces that engage with the changing elements around the Lund.

During the course, time will be spent exploring the power of monochrome work to create atmosphere and describe space, concertina sketchbooks as a method of gathering information to use back in the studio and allowing work to evolve between location and studio.

Lunches and refreshments included. Days run from 10am to 4pm (ish)

About Kittie

Kittie is an artist based in Edinburgh with a practice that focuses on drawing and printmaking. She takes her inspiration from the full sensory experience of time spent outdoors, most often along the East coast of Scotland. Much of her work is completed on location, elsewhere sketches made outside provide the starting point for prints and studio drawings. Kittie has won a number of awards for her work and is a professional member of Visual Arts Scotland and the Society of Wildlife Artists.

'My work is concerned with the experience of time spent alongside the natural world. I am drawn to places that have an abundance of nature – seabird colonies, fertile coastlines and remote islands. The energy in the work comes from the constantly changing elements of the natural world – birds moving in and out of vision and the shifting quality of weather and light. My attempts to capture the change are what interests me, as well as my enchantment with a world which, as a human, I will only ever occupy the edge of.'
